India can boast of a rich heritage of myths, legends and folktales. Home to numerous tribes and communities, the country possesses a diverse repository of stories that have been passed down through generations, often through oral traditions. These tales offer glimpses into the worldviews, beliefs and cultural practices of communities whose histories are not always adequately represented in mainstream narratives. The present collection, edited by Anoushka Jain, is an ambitious attempt to bring together a few gems from this vast treasure trove. Drawing from different tribal and indigenous traditions, the book brings together stories narrated by members of the respective communities as well as those collected from oral sources.
